This policy explains what information Collins Law Firm, P.C. (“SC Legal Matters,” “we,” “us”) collects through sclegalmatters.com (the “Website”), how we use it, and the choices you have.
Because we are a law firm, information you share with us about a legal matter is also protected by the Rules of Professional Conduct that govern lawyers. Where those rules give you more protection than this policy describes, the rules control.
Contacting Us Does Not Make You a Client
Submitting our consultation form, sending us an email, or calling us does not create an attorney-client relationship. Please do not send confidential or sensitive details about your situation until we have spoken with you. Even so, we treat information you send us about a possible legal matter as confidential, as the Rules of Professional Conduct require for prospective clients.
Information We Collect
Information you give us. When you use our consultation form, email us, or call us, we collect what you choose to provide. This may include your name, phone number, email address, the type of legal matter, the names of other people involved, a description of your situation, and similar information. We may also ask for your ZIP code or general location.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, our web server records basic technical information about each visit, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view, the page that referred you, and the date and time. Your approximate location (such as your city or region) may be estimated from your IP address. We do not collect precise (GPS) location.
Cookies and advertising. We may use cookies and similar technologies, and may allow advertising partners such as Google to place them on the Website, to understand how visitors find and use the Website, to measure whether our advertising is effective, and to show our advertisements to people who may need our services. These partners may collect information such as your IP address, approximate location, device information, and how you interact with the Website and our ads, and may combine it with information they hold from other sources, under their own privacy policies. You can limit advertising personalization through your browser settings and at Google’s My Ad Center.
How We Use Information
- To respond to your inquiry and schedule a consultation
- To check for conflicts of interest and decide whether we are able to represent you
- To provide legal services if you become our client
- To operate, secure, and improve the Website
- To measure and improve our advertising
- To comply with our legal and professional obligations
We do not sell your personal information.
When We Share Information
We share information only as described here and as the Rules of Professional Conduct permit:
- Service providers that handle information on our behalf, such as our website host, our consultation-form processor (Formspree), and our email and practice-management providers.
- Advertising partners, as described under Cookies and advertising above. We do not share the description of your legal matter with advertising partners.
- Legal requirements — when required by law, such as in response to a subpoena or court order, or when the Rules of Professional Conduct permit or require disclosure.
- Transfer of our practice — if our law practice is sold, merged, or transferred to another lawyer or law firm, information may be transferred to our successor, but only as the Rules of Professional Conduct permit. Those rules limit what may be shared during negotiations and require notice to clients before client files are transferred.
How Long We Keep Information
We keep information as long as required or permitted by the Rules of Professional Conduct and other law in the states where we practice, and as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy. For example, we keep records of people who have contacted us about a legal matter so that we can check for conflicts of interest. Website server logs are kept for a limited period.
How We Protect Information
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect the information we hold. No method of transmission over the internet or of electronic storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. For that reason, please do not send confidential details through the Website’s form.
Children
The Website is not directed to children under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them through the Website. If you believe a child has provided us information through the Website, please contact us.
Your Choices
You may contact us to ask what information we have about you, to correct it, or to ask us to delete it. We will honor these requests where we can, but we may need to keep records required for conflict checks, by the Rules of Professional Conduct, or by other law.
We do not currently respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
